2006. Three healthcare leadership chapters across Northern California decided to merge into one organization.
No playbook for it. Just a conviction that healthcare leaders across the state deserved a unified community. Not three fragmented ones.
That’s how CAHL started.
20 years later, here’s what the California Association of Healthcare Leaders has become:
1) 1,970 members across 50 of California’s 58 counties. Oregon border to Kern County.
2) Third-largest ACHE chapter in the country. 11.4% membership growth in the past year.
3) 80+ hours of professional programming delivered annually across the Bay Area, Sacramento, and the Valley.
4) 100+ mentees paired with senior executives in 2025 alone.
5) 249 members who’ve earned their FACHE. 33 advanced last year.
6) Student Case Competitions drawing 11 teams from 5 universities, with career coaching from sitting C-suite leaders.
And the board that drives all of this? Volunteer-led. Every single member donates their time while running hospitals, health systems, and clinics full-time.
That’s the part most people don’t see. The programming, the mentorship matching, the Congress planning, the scholarship funding. Built by people who believe in developing healthcare leaders enough to do it on top of their day jobs.
The mentee who entered a cohort as a new manager and connected with someone who changed how they thought about their career. The Chico State team that swept the statewide College Bowl. The conversations at networking events that opened doors nobody saw coming.
Two decades of that. Compounding quietly.
