Volunteer Spotlight | Ryan deGive

May 6, 2023 | HEN (Higher Education Network), Member Spotlight

Ryan deGive, FACHE, CPHIMS, is the newest Co-Chair of the CAHL Higher Education Network Committee and recently started a new role with Contra Costa Health System as a Health Service Administrator. Ryan received the Volunteer of the Year Award for Generating Pride and Enthusiasm.

Please tell us a bit about what you’ve been doing as a volunteer, and why you chose to take that particular role.
After enjoying many of the great networking and educational events CAHL has offered over the years, I finally decided to become a volunteer in late 2020. Joining The Higher Education Network (HEN) Committee was an easy choice for me.  My experience serving as an Adjunct at CSU East Bay and exploring the Stanford Medical Campus while working at Stanford Health Care provided me with immense respect for Education and for Students. I admire how the Committee aims to inform our partner Grad and Undergrad programs and their students of the many resources available to them through CAHL. One such resource, the Student Scholarship Program, has been where much of my volunteer efforts have been.  In  my new HEN Committee role, I will also be branching out and assisting with other HEN initiatives this year.

Could you share a “CAHL Moment” with us?
Shortly after joining the HEN Committee, I had the opportunity to serve as a Panel Member on the annual school visit to my alma mater CSU East Bay.

The visit was organized and moderated by fellow HEN Committee member (now my fellow HEN Co-Chair) Jackie, who was also a current student in CSU East Bay’s MS-HCA program at the time. The event took place virtually during the normal class meeting time. The Instructor, Professor (Hernandez) St. Clair, had been one of my professors and had also helped onboard me when I joined the MS-HCA Adjunct Faculty pool after graduating. It had been several years since I taught a course, and I was excited to reconnect with her. The event was a lot of fun. I enjoyed interacting with my fellow panelists and the students. I was grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.

For me, this moment captures the spirit of CAHL: Connecting with our peers, both industry veterans and those just starting out, to share our experiences and support one another’s growth.

I’m open to being a resource to CAHL members if they need…
I am always happy to connect and discuss CAHL/ACHE, Leadership, Education or any other topic of interest.

My healthcare background has been primarily focused on Hospital Patient Flow, Capacity Management, Patient Placement, Medical Transport and Nurse Staffing. I also have more focused  experience with various Health Informational Systems and also data analysis. I’m happy to talk more specifically about these topics as well.
